About 7,700 years ago, Mount Mazama erupted and collapsed, creating a huge caldera that filled with rain and snow over time. This is how Crater Lake was born.

Some of the trees that were knocked down by the eruption fell into the lake and sank to the bottom.
Despite the harsh conditions, the lake supports a variety of life forms. There are algae, bacteria, mosses, and lichens that grow on the rocks and in the water.
The lake is considered a spiritual site by the Klamath and Modoc tribes, who have legends and stories about its origin and meaning.
